Malcolm J Ross retires

Malcolm J Ross is one of the founding partners of Brown Turner Ross Solicitors; which formed in 2008 and is the result of a merger between Southport-based Brown Turner Solicitors and Liverpool firm, Malcolm J Ross. Malcolm is retiring this month, aged 65.

The early days…

As a young lad, Malcolm liked to challenge the norm and did not accept things at face value. Watching programmes like Perry Mason, coupled with an inquisitive nature gave Malcolm the drive to go into the legal profession. Malcolm wanted to be able to go into court and work hard for his clients, doing it his own way and not wanting to settle for anything less than success.

Liverpool born and bred, Malcolm has enjoyed a long and successful career, which all began when he studied law as a student in 1963. Malcolm qualified in 1970, and after just one year working as a qualified solicitor he set up his own practice in 1971 in Temple Court. Malcolm J Ross Solicitors initially specialised in criminal law and then branched out into wills, probate, matrimonial and more commercial aspects.

When he first set up Malcolm was a one-man-band with a part time secretary with every aspect of running a law firm done by himself; answering the phones, sending the post, going to court, administration and deliveries. He fondly remembers answering the phone in different accents, to give the impression of having more staff.

Malcolm set up his branch office in Gateacre in the late 1970's, and then moved into present building on Stanley Street from Temple Court in the mid 1980's with a number of staff and junior partners working for him.

Legacy and influence…

Malcolm had quite a big influence on law firms in the late 1970's to mid 1980's, he was one of, if not the first, law firms to advertise in Liverpool. Ahead of his time, he put his adverts on the back of city centre buses and of course the famous radio jingle, which nearly every Liverpudlian could recite upon request "Malcolm J Ross, the friend at the end of the phone, were here to help you."

A number of the more traditional law firms did not see the benefits of advertising, but soon followed suit and began with their own advertising campaigns.

A true testament to Malcolm's sheer talent and the superiority of his legal expertise is the quality of the solicitors that have trained under him over the years. Malcolm has seen many of Liverpool's well known and respected lawyers flourish and set up their own firms, which are still going strong today, after learning their trade under his wing. What the Malcolm J Ross alumni saw and learnt during their time with Malcolm surely gave them the knowledge and strength of character to set up on their own.

The future…

After 37 years of waking up at 6am, Malcolm feels like it is time to take things a little easier. He plans to do some of the things he has not had chance to do while working, for example visiting Liverpool's two cathedrals, they do say you're never a tourist in your own city.

A keen history buff, Malcolm has a few museums, art galleries and historical locations in his sights, whilst also taking the time to appreciate some of the UK's countryside.

A passionate Liverpool Football Club fan, Malcolm has a season ticket and can often be found cheering on his team at the match, something which he plans to enjoy even more so.

Malcolm leaves behind a legacy of innovation and a law firm not afraid to push the boundaries of convention, Brown Turner Ross Solicitors will continue to grow and flourish thanks to the dedication and commitment from Malcolm.
